In an era characterized by moral drift and the erosion of traditional values, the wisdom of the Church Fathers provides a steadfast anchor for those seeking to navigate the turbulent waters of leadership. Saint Ambrose, the courageous Bishop of Milan in the 4th century, emerges as a towering figure, his letters to emperors serving as a timeless beacon for those called to positions of influence. His writings provide deep insights into righteous leadership. These principles align with the lasting truths of the Christian faith.

Ambrose clearly states that earthly rulers have power, but they are still accountable to the ultimate Sovereign: the Lord God Almighty. He pointedly reminds Emperor Valentinian, "As all men who live under the Roman sway engage in military service under you, the Emperors and Princes of the world, so too do you yourselves owe service to Almighty God and our holy faith."1 This statement breaks the idea of absolute power. It claims that all leaders hold a sacred trust. They must act according to God's will and for His greater glory. Leaders are stewards. They have a duty to uphold God's eternal law and to further His kingdom's goals on earth. This perspective stands in stark contrast to secular ideologies that elevate human autonomy and prioritize worldly gain above divine mandate.

A central tenet of Ambrose's teachings is the inextricable link between genuine faith and righteous governance. He earnestly exhorts Emperor Valentinian, "Since, then, most Christian Emperor, there is due from you to the true God both faith and zeal, care and devotion for the faith...".2 This "zeal" is more than just following religious customs. It reflects a leader's deep and constant dedication to the Christian faith. This dedication affects all their decisions and policies. A godly leader actively champions and defends biblical values, recognizing that true justice, societal flourishing, and lasting peace are rooted in adherence to God's revealed word. This involves not only personal piety but also a public stance for righteousness, even in the face of opposition or cultural pressure.

Ambrose further underscores the indispensable need for discernment and humility in leadership, acknowledging the leader's constant dependence on divine wisdom and guidance. He wisely counsels, "when the question concerns religion, think upon God. No one is injured because God is set before him."3 This shows how vital it is to seek God's will. We should do this through prayer, studying Scripture, reading the church fathers, and getting advice from wise mentors. It's crucial to base decisions on lasting principles instead of following popular opinion or political trends. Ambrose stresses that leaders must answer to a higher power. They have a serious duty to seek “the mercy of the Lord in regard to the Roman Empire.”4 This responsibility goes beyond personal interests; it includes caring for the whole nation.

Saint Ambrose's principles suggest these important guidelines for modern Christian leaders:

• Biblical Integrity: Leaders should base their lives and leadership on Scripture. God’s word should shape their character, guide their decisions, and influence their actions in all areas of life.

• Leaders must remember that they will answer to God. They will stand before Christ's judgment seat. There, they will account for their actions in both public and private life.

• Brave Pursuit of Godly Justice: Leaders should champion fairness and righteousness. They must defend the defenseless, advocate for the marginalized, and make sure laws reflect God's moral order. This promotes the common good.

• Christ-like Compassion and Service: Leaders should show the selfless love of Christ. They need to be empathetic and address the real needs of those they serve. Service must come before self-interest.

Saint Ambrose's lasting legacy challenges today's Christian leaders. It calls us to reject compromise and adopt a bold, faith-driven leadership style. This approach honors God, serves His people, and furthers His kingdom in the world.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we humbly beseech You to grant wisdom and discernment to all those You have called to lead. Imbue them with the spirit of Saint Ambrose, that they may recognize their accountability to You above all earthly powers. Fill them with a fervent zeal for righteousness, guiding them to uphold Your divine law in their decisions. Grant them humility to seek Your counsel and the courage to stand firm for truth, even amidst opposition. May their leadership reflect Christ's selfless love and compassion, bringing forth justice and blessing to those they serve. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
